Air suspension: is it the strut, the compressor, or the valve block?

How to tell which of the three has failed from the symptom alone, why a new compressor dies without a leak fix, and the order to diagnose in.

Diagnosis·3 min read·Updated 2026-09-20

An air suspension has three failure points that get blamed on each other: the air struts or springs, the compressor that supplies them, and the valve block that decides where the air goes. They cost very different amounts, so guessing is expensive. The good news is that the symptom usually tells you which one it is.

Read the symptom first

SymptomMost likely cause
Drops overnight on one corner onlyLeaking air spring or strut on that corner, or its line and fitting
Drops evenly across all four cornersLeak upstream — valve block, dryer, or a shared line
Won't rise at all, compressor silentRelay, fuse, wiring, or a compressor that has failed outright
Compressor runs constantly or too oftenA leak somewhere in the system, or a dryer that is saturated
Rises slowly, worse in cold weatherSaturated dryer or a weakening compressor
Rises but sits unevenly side to sideHeight sensor, linkage, or a valve block that is not distributing correctly

Diagnose in this order

  1. 01Read the fault codes. The level-control module will usually tell you which corner it cannot reach or whether the compressor is being commanded to run. This is five minutes and it rules out half the system.
  2. 02Check the relay and the fuse first. On Mercedes-Benz Airmatic cars the relay is a known failure point and it costs a fraction of a compressor. If the compressor is silent, test the relay and its supply before condemning the compressor.
  3. 03Listen and time it. From a cold start, note how long the compressor runs to bring the car up. Continuous running, or repeated cycling while parked, means it is chasing a leak.
  4. 04Find the leak with soapy water. Spray the strut bellows, the air line fittings at each corner and the connections at the valve block. Bubbles find leaks that a visual inspection misses. Do this with the system pressurised.
  5. 05Only then condemn a component. If the car holds height overnight and the compressor still will not run, you have an electrical or compressor fault. If it drops, you have a leak — and the compressor is a victim, not the cause.

Why a new compressor dies quickly

The compressor is a pump with a duty cycle. It is designed to top the system up occasionally, not to run continuously. If a strut is leaking, the compressor runs until it overheats or wears out — and then it gets replaced, the leak is still there, and the replacement follows within weeks.

  • Fix the leak before fitting a new compressor.
  • Replace or service the dryer at the same time. A saturated dryer puts moisture into the system, which corrodes the valve block and causes the exact fault you are trying to fix.
  • Check the relay and its supply. A sticking relay that keeps the compressor energised will kill a new unit without any leak at all.

Strut or bag

Where the design allows it, the air spring can be replaced separately from the damper. In practice, most cars arriving with a failed bellows have enough miles on them that a complete strut is the better call — you are paying for one alignment either way, and the damper is already worn.

We stock compressors for the W221 S-Class and for BMW platforms, valve blocks and struts. Send the VIN and the fault codes and we will confirm the match.

Common questions

My car drops overnight on one corner. What has failed?
Almost certainly a leak at that corner — the air spring or strut bellows, or the line and fitting feeding it. Compressors and valve blocks do not usually cause a single-corner drop overnight. Find the leak before replacing anything else.
Can I replace just the compressor?
Yes, but find the leak first. A compressor usually fails because it has been running continuously to compensate for a leak it can no longer keep up with. Fitting a new compressor to a car that still leaks will destroy the new one in weeks.
Should I replace the relay at the same time?
It is cheap insurance on Mercedes-Benz Airmatic systems. A burnt or sticking relay is one of the most common causes of a compressor that does not run, and it is often misdiagnosed as a failed compressor.
